Individual League report for Monday 27th Sept.
The individual league week three was played this week and there once again some great matches. Last years league winner and defending champion, Aaron Canavan, took on his 1st division and Upton team mate from last season, Tony Le Podevin. Le Podevin started the match well taking the first frame thanks to a fantastic snooker laid with just one red remaining. Canavan attempted but missed the final red an agonising 8 times, gifting Le Podevin a very helpful total of 40 points and a cheeky notch on the score board. Canavan didn't waste any time putting this to the back of his mind and went on to take the next 4 frames and bang in breaks of 48 and 72, the match finishig 4-1 to the island and CI champ. Jeremy Gogan was up against former island player Rob Newton, the very player who gave dealt him his exit from the 2010 island championship in April. Gogan took the first frame with some solid potting, not least of which was the frame ball brown which was lamped in the length of the table up the side cushion. Newton came back to make it 1-1 but Gogan rattled off the next to take the lead again at 2-1. Gogan then found himself 23 behind in the fourth frame with just 18 points on the table, while Newton, who was clearly rattled, found a burst of form and began a rampage of long pots and fluent break building. Needing a 5 point snooker to tie with the blue pink and black remaining, Gogan potted the blue and immediately laid a tough snooker behind the black. Newton missed the pink on his first attempt and with a 6 point penalty secured by Gogan, he showed his grit and sank a tough long pink and landed plum on the black to secure the frame and guaratee the match victory.
Chris Alexander, who has been in blistering form so far this season, played a tough opponent in Ross Symes. Alexander certainly had a matchon his hands but showed his consistency when he took the match with a surprising 5-0 victory. The score line did not reflect the match though as most frames went to the colours and Symes was within touching distance of securing a much tighter score line. Alexander has now dropped just one frame in 3 matches and also tops the breaks table with an 85 break he slipped in against Guy Heyes. Heyes was himself in action this week taking on an out of sorts Steve McCrimmon. Players have begun to fear Heyes for more than his suffocating safety play though, and he has officially earned his nickname of Guy "the Grim Reaper" Heyes due to his 4-1 victories now ending the careers of two island snooker players in two years. In the 2009/2010 season his first match against 2006 island champion Ian Gould ended 4-1 and was quickly followed by the announcement that Gould was quitting his season after just one game. After just 3 matches in this 2010/11 season, his first 4-1 win has also now been followed with a shock retirement announcement as McCrimmon, an Upton, Inter-Insular, and Home Internationals level player,
has put his cue away for good. Any player now facing Heyes at 3-1 down must feel they are not playing the green baize but walking the Green Mile.
